Banh Mi Throwdown Primer, Pt. 2
The showdown between Boka Truck and Cafe Gutenberg is here (Monday, July 26th), and Richmond will surely be treated to a lesson in tasty sandwich making. Hopefully, we can relax a little about authenticity and precise definitions after the previous primer post. Of course, the food will be front and center in the banh mi [...]

Fine Dining Gives Me the Creeps
Earlier today I got asked for a fancy restaurant recommendation. I responded that I’ve got a blind spot for fine dining in my world view. It doesn’t come to mind. I don’t really think of it as an option, and despite a few really impressive hoity toity meals in my past, I don’t really appreciate [...]

Pescado’s in High Summer Mode
One of the husbands I borrow on occasion lives south of the river. I don’t hold this against him because he eats everything and likes coming in to the city to eat. It also means that although he’s been telling me good things about Pescado’s for a while…

Local Food Photo-Op at Silver Diner
After some initial confusion, I realized that Silver Diner was serious when their PR firm invited me to a free lunch at their 10860 W. Broad location. The press release said something about showcasing their new line of menu items featuring local ingredients. It seemed perplexing to me that a business would expend so much [...]

I interrupt my regular posting for a BIG Announcement:
As I mentioned, I am one of the top 3 finalists for Richmond’s Healthiest Person – a contest sponsored by Retreat Doctors’ Hospital. The voting starts today and goes until next Wednesday, June 16th. Obviously, I would be honored to win the title of RVA’s Healthiest Person, [...]

Broad Appétit RVA
This year’s chef competition included a “Healthy Dish” category among the other awards categories – “To Dine For,” “To Diet For” “Ambience/Décor” and “People’s Choice.”
Along with all the restaurants there was also other vendors- including local organic farms and speciality food providers, in addition to live music. i
Isaac and I waded through the crowd while perusing the options until spotting something that caught our eye.
Tastebuds American Bistro had something for the both of us. … I’m already thinking of ways to incorporate these two flavors into some of my favorite things – (ie smoothies and oatmeal) After walking around in the heat, sweating through our shirts and eating a few mid morning snacks, Isaac and I hopped in the car and headed to our CSA’s farm party for lots more food (that was delicious and free!!).

I Can Like Women, Too
Because the bulk of my friends are male, it’s not often that I get invited to a girls’ night in. And in this case, the person doing the inviting was Virginia Rowland of Rowland Fine Dining, so I knew it would be a house full of interesting females, wit…

My Sunday Menage a Trois
Nothing like a nap to get re-energized after a long afternoon eating and drinking on Broad Street. And what better way to spend that energy than at tonight’s Live at Ipanema show? Best of all, this month’s photographer for the event is a good friend, b…

One Broad’s Appetite
I’m going to be honest. I made two laps at Broad Appetit over the course of an hour and a half and did more talking than eating. I then spent the next three hours in the air-conditioned comfort of Bistro 27, eating, drinking and listening to Gypsy Root…

Broad Appetit 2010

Broad Appetit: Better Every Year
Hitting this year’s Broad Appetit, we went early to beat the crowds, brought plenty of water, wore a thick layer of sun screen, and timed our visit prior to Jasper’s nap. Just before leaving the house, we accepted an invitation to 5:30 dinner, so we had to eat early and fast enough to be hungry [...]

My Maudlin Career, er Evening
When I was out artwalking on Friday night, I’d paused in front of 27 to see how busy they were and wave hi to whomever might be working. From behind the very busy bar, Dave the comedian spotted me, smiled and pointed and began to unbutton his shirt, as…

R.I.P. Marshall Street Cafe
How’s this for irony? On the eve of Broad Appetit, with 25,000 people expected in Jackson Ward tomorrow to eat, we lost one of our neighborhood restaurants this afternoon. And by lost, I don’t mean went out of business, I mean gone. The building is in …

The Macaron Food Pyramid
